Frequently asked questions
Did the Balanced Growth (MySuper) investment option deliver a positive investment return last financial year?
Yes. For the year ended 30 June 2026, the Balanced Growth (MySuper) investment option delivered a positive return of 5.89%. This was over 2% above inflation (CPI) of 3.8% over the same period.
I thought BUSSQ was not allowed to accept new members. Is that correct?
BUSSQ continues to operate as normal.
The annual performance test result relates to the performance of the Balanced Growth (MySuper) investment option and does not affect BUSSQ's ability to accept new members or support current members.
How far away was Balanced Growth (MySuper) from reaching the benchmark?
BUSSQ’s Balanced Growth (MySuper) product did not pass the performance test by 0.022 percentage points. However, regardless of the margin, BUSSQ takes the performance test result seriously and is focused on the actions already undertaken to improve outcomes for members.
What is the annual performance test?
The annual performance test assesses a super product’s investment performance after fees over a period of time, in this case the last 10 years.
Effectively, the test is in two-parts:
- investment performance relative to a benchmark portfolio based on the investment option’s strategic asset allocation set by BUSSQ; and
- administration fees charged in the last financial year relative to the median fee charged by superannuation funds for the same category of investment option.
Products that deliver investment returns after fees more than 0.5% below the combined benchmarks over the last 10 years are classified as underperforming.
The test aims to measure how well BUSSQ has implemented the strategic asset allocation that it has set, by comparing the product’s investment return to a passively invested benchmark (hypothetical product) with the same strategic asset allocation.
The test does not measure the overall level of investment returns and does not directly measure the performance of a product against the products of other super funds.
What does this result mean?
BUSSQ’s Balanced Growth (MySuper) investment option did not meet the required level of investment returns after fees as determined under that test. This means that BUSSQ is required to notify all members invested in this option that the test was not met. A notice will be sent to these members by 24 September 2026. This will explain to these members what their options are.
What is the Balanced Growth (MySuper) benchmark and what does it mean?
The benchmark is made up of different indices to reflect the different assets the portfolio is invested in and the median fees and costs of similar products. Market indices track how different parts of the investment market perform.
APRA calculates the benchmark using recognised market indices for each asset class. For example, Australian shares are measured against the S&P/ASX 300 Total Return Index. For BUSSQ’s Balanced Growth (MySuper) investment option, this figure is then applied as the benchmark for the percentage of the portfolio that is invested in Australian shares, with other asset classes measured against similar market indices. Those indices, and their allocation to the portfolio, form the investment performance benchmark used in APRA’s annual performance test assessment.
The performance test also assesses a product’s administrations fees and costs against a benchmark that represents the median administration fees and costs for comparable super products. APRA’s assessment of the fund’s performance against these various benchmarks makes up the performance test each year.
If you would like to learn more about APRA's annual performance test, including how the benchmark is calculated and the published 2026 results, you can visit APRA's Comprehensive Product Performance Package 2026 webpages on the APRA website.
